Chitosan
Chitosans are a large group of substances with diverse properties due to their varying degrees of deacetylation and molecular weights. On the following pages, we would like to introduce you to our product portfolio in more detail and demonstrate the possibilities offered by chitosan.
Quality lines
HMC has introduced different quality lines to meet the demands of each industry. The following lines are offered:
Chitoscience ® - for scientific needs in universities
Chitoceuticals ® - for medical technology and the pharmaceutical industry, this quality line is further divided into 3 different levels - depending on the stage of their development:
Chitoceuticals ® Standard - Applications in medical technology and initial pharmaceutical research
Chitoceutical ® GMP compliant - Medical devices, use of chitosan in pharma as an excipient
Chitoceuticals ® GMP - Application of chitosan as an API, usually a derivatization of the chitosan is carried out first - read more about this in the contract manufacturing section
Origin of Chitosan
Generally, chitosan is obtained by deacetylation of chitin. The chitin for HMC's chitosan is mainly derived from Crustacea ( Chionoecetes opilio ) .InquiryOther sources (e.g. shrimp, squid, mushrooms or insects) are also possible.
How do you find the right chitosan?
HMC's chitosans are classified according to different specifications. This allows you to select the right product and ensure consistent properties. The first number after the quality line indicates the degree of deacetylation of the chitosan. The degree of deacetylation describes the amount of free amino groups on the molecule.
Degree of deacetylation % = 1-F A = 100 - degree of acetylation
The higher the number, the more “active” the molecule can be.
The second number in our product names represents the viscosity of the chitosans. Dynamic viscosity is measured as a 1% solution in 1% acetic acid or, for derivatives, in water. Before measurement, the chitosan is dissolved for at least 2 hours with stirring. Viscosity also provides an indication of molecular weight, which, however, cannot be directly related to molecular weight.
Example of the product classification "Chitoceuticals standard Chitosan 95/1500":
Chitoceuticals standard line,
95% Deacetylated (FA = 0.1), 5% Acetylated
1500mPas viscosity
Properties of chitosan
The properties of chitosan can vary depending on the chitosan used. Chitosans are characterized by the following properties, among others :
Molecular formula: (C 8 H 11 NO 4 ) n
CAS No.: 9012-76-4
Molecular weight per unit: 161.15 g/mol
High charge carrier density
Biodegradable
Non-toxic, LD 50 16 g/kg body weight
Antibacterial, antifungal
Film and fiber forming, cross-linking
Immobilization of living organisms
Anti-inflammatory
Wound healing
Stimulation of the immune system and metabolism
Odor-binding
Binding ability to proteins, heavy metals, suspended particles
Not thermoplastic, decomposes at 280°C
Examples of chitosan applications
Drug delivery systems in various forms such as microgranules, microspheres, hydrogels, nanoparticles or nanofibers for e.g. oral, transdermal, nasal or vaginal applications
non-viral vectors for the transport of nucleic acids such as RNA (e.g. for mRNA vaccines) or DNA
Active ingredient boosters for vaccines
Scaffold in the field of tissue engineering for the regeneration of e.g. heart muscle tissue, bones, skin, eyes or nerves
Wound dressings with hemostatic and antibacterial effects
Learn more in our Publications section . Here we present current publications on chitosan and its applications.
Chitosan oligomer
Chitosan oligomer is a chitosan oligosaccharide consisting of D-glucosamine linked to β-(1➔ 4) units. It can be produced by deacetylation and hydrolysis of chitin.
Applications Chitosan Oligomer
Tissue Engineering: Chitosan oligomers support the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts – formation of bone tissue
Drug transport and release: Formation of complexes e.g. with plasmid DNA, targeted release of drugs e.g. in the lungs or intestines
Wound treatment: Acceleration of wound healing processes, combination of chitosan and chitosan oligomers for wound dressings
Use of antibacterial effects
Effect against fungal infestation of plants
